LAWRENCEVILLE - A Gwinnett County teenager is recovering from gunshot wounds suffered Wednesday afternoon in an altercation with county police.

The incident began shortly before 4 p.m. with officers from the Gwinnett County Police Department responding to a domestic dispute call at the Sugar Mill apartment complex on Walther Boulevard in Lawrenceville.

According to police Corporal Deon Washington, officers were met upon arrival by a 16-year-old male brandishing a knife. The unidentified suspect allegedly began advancing toward the officers' position, ignoring several verbal commands to drop his weapon.

At this time, Washington said officers made an effort to create a considerable distance between themselves and the suspect. Officers continued to issue verbal commands to the suspect throughout the exchange.

Washington said the suspect eventually began to close the gap between himself and the officers, prompting officers to open fire in an effort to halt the suspect's advances.

The suspect was transported from the scene to a local hospital, where he is said to be recovering.

Washington said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation responded to the scene and has assumed the lead role in the investigation.
