Jimmie Johnson led only six laps in Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway – but they were the most important ones, the final six.
After dominating the race, leading 312 of the 334 laps that made up the 500 mile race, Brad Keselowski could not hold off the hard charging Johnson, who wrestled the lead away, then drove off to score the victory.
More importantly, Johnson’s win denies Keselowski a free pass into the Championship round of the Chase in two weeks at Homestead, meaning he has little to no choice but to win next weekend at Phoenix to be able to make the Chase.
Johnson talked to the media afterwards about the win. We also heard from winning Crew Chief Chad Knaus, along with second place finisher Keselowski and fourth place finisher Kyle Busch.
On Saturday, Keselowski had it far from easy, but he again flexed his muscles in the Lone Star State, as he grabbed the lead from Austin Dillon with just over 11 laps to go, and drove away to score the NASCAR Xfinity Series win at Texas Motor Speedway.
Keselowski drove away to a 1.1 second victory over Kevin Harvick. It marked Keselowski's second series win of the season and his second at Texas. It also gave Team Penske the owner’s championship in the Xfinity Series. We heard from Keselowski after the victory, as well as fifth place finisher Ty Dillon.
After a bit of a stumble at Martinsville opened the door for someone to challenge Erik Jones for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series last week, Jones looked to slam the door shut Friday night with dominating win at Texas Motor Speedway. Jones led 117 of the 147 laps en route to his third win of the season.
The race uncharacteristically ran with only one caution, a track record low. That worked to Jones' advantage, as he finished almost three seconds ahead of second place Daniel Suarez. The win gives Jones a 17 point advantage over Matt Crafton going into the final two races. Jones talked about his night afterwards.
The NASCAR Sprint Cup and Xfinity Series will both be back in action this weekend, as both series travel to Phoenix International Raceway for their penultimate races of the season. WDUN will have live MRN Radio coverage of both events, beginning on Saturday with the Xfinity Series DAV 200 beginning at 3:30 pm on 102.9 FM. The action continues on Sunday with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Quicken Loans 500 beginning at 1:30 pm on 102.9 FM and 550 AM.
