GAINESVILLE — Law enforcement and emergency crews remain on the scene of a fatal crash on I-985 northbound just south of Mundy Mill Road.
Initial reports indicate the driver of a tanker truck drove off the Plainview Road bridge and hit the northbound lanes of the highway. However, officials with both Hall County Fire Services and the Georgia Department of Transportation said those reports were false. Instead, the tractor trailer was traveling northbound on I-985 and somehow crashed into the bridge.
The crash happened just after 6 a.m. The Georgia State Patrol confirmed just after 6:30 a.m. that the driver of the tanker died in the accident.
Hall County Fire Service Capt. Zachary Brackett said the vehicle was a dry bulk transport unit and was not carrying hazardous material.
Authorities have told AccessWDUN both the north and southbound lanes of I-985 will be closed for an undetermined amount of time. There is also structural damage to the bridge, so traffic is restricted in that area. GDOT has two crews on the scene, assessing damage to the bridge.
This story will be updated.
