ATLANTA (AP) Lawyers for two metro Atlanta counties say they've filed lawsuits against 15 phone service providers they say have failed to collect and turn over 911 fees.
The lawyers said in a an emailed statement that the federal and state court lawsuits filed Wednesday seek to recover more than $50 million for three years of unpaid fees for Cobb and Gwinnett counties.
The state Legislature approved the collection of these fees to support and improve the county 911 systems.
The lawsuits allege the phone service providers are misrepresenting the type and number of phone lines for which the fees are collected and are under billing customers. The suits say that has meant an annual loss of about $9 million for Cobb and about $8 million for Gwinnett.
