BOGART, Ga. (AP) A biotechnology firm told sheriff's officials that 565 vials of human protein have gone missing from its northeast Georgia facility.

An Oconee County sheriff's report says the missing material from Georgia-based firm rPeptide is used in research on Alzheimer's disease.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports (http://bit.ly/1MGDX5U) that the missing vials of protein are valued at a total of $40,000.

Authorities said the vials went missing between Dec. 18 and Dec. 20.

Oconee County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Lee Weems said there were no indications of forced entry to the building.

Weems told the Athens newspaper that he "can't begin to speculate'' what would motivate someone to take the material, or what a thief might do with it.

The Banner-Herald reports that a spokeswoman for rPeptide declined to comment on the missing products.
