State championships, state tourneys, finales and Signing Day all on tap

Welcome to the busiest week of the winter sports season.

Swimming championships, wrestling sectionals and the conclusion of the basketball regular season highlight the week -- not to mention a day that has become a national sports obsession, as Wednesday brings National Signing Day.

For athletes across the nation, especially football standouts, National Signing Day concludes a years-long odyssey that sees them commit their futures to collegiate programs and officially end all of the searching, wondering, hoping and -- quite often -- stress that comes along with the recruiting process. Every sport takes part in the occasion, though other endeavors often allow athletes to make things official earlier. Football, however, must wait until this day to conclude a process that is equal parts incredible, fulfilling, ludicrous and memorable.

And that's just one day this week.

This weekend will see the state's best prep swimmers and divers meet up at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta to engage in the GHSA championships. Northeast Georgia will be well represented, and a handful of area swimmers will head south with medal expectations -- including defending state champs Colin Monagahan of Gainesville and Ty Powers of North Hall. The meet will commence with the diving portion on Thursday and conclude with swimming finals on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the region's top individual wrestlers will begin state tournament competition when the state sectionals get underway at various sites (see below for a list). Grapplers will battle for top seeding for next week's state finals in Macon, including a number of defending individual champs (and three teams) from northeast Georgia.

Finally, the basketball regular season will wrap this week. And although a number of top seeds have already been determined, there are plenty more spots to decide for upcoming region tournaments -- and fans can expect some fireworks in a couple of key contests.

Take a deep breath and get ready...

AREA SPORTS SCHEDULE, FEB. 2-7
Tuesday, Feb. 3
BASKETBALL:
Apalachee at Gainesville
Dawson County at Fannin County
East Jackson at Franklin County
Habersham Central at Lambert
Jackson County at Jefferson
Johnson at Stephens County
Lakeview Academy at Commerce
Lumpkin County at Banks County
North Hall at Chestatee
Rabun County at Washington-Wilkes
Riverside Military at Social Circle boys
Towns County at Hebron Christian
West Hall at East Hall

Wednesday, Feb. 4
National Signing Day

Thursday, Feb. 5
SWIMMING:
State Swim and Dive meet at Georgia Tech Aquatic Center, Atlanta

Friday, Feb. 6
BASKETBALL:
Buford at White County
Centennial at Habersham Central
East Jackson at Jefferson
Fannin County at Banks County
Franklin County at East Hall
Greene County at Rabun County
Hebron Christian at Lakeview Academy
Jackson County at Oconee County
Johnson at Monroe Area
Lanier at Flowery Branch
Social Circle at Union County
Stephens County at North Hall
Tallulah Falls at Towns County
Washington-Wilkes boys at Riverside Military
West Hall at Dawson County
Winder-Barrow at Gainesville

SWIMMING:
State Swim and Dive meet at Georgia Tech Aquatic Center, Atlanta

WRESTLING:
State sectionals
(East Sectionals):
Class AAAAAA -- Mill Creek
Class AAAAA -- Lanier
Class AAAA -- Buford
Class AAA -- Morgan County
Class AA -- Greater Atlanta Christian
Class A -- George Walton Academy

Saturday, Feb. 7
SWIMMING:
State Swim and Dive meet at Georgia Tech Aquatic Center, Atlanta

WRESTLING:
State sectionals
(East Sectionals):
Class AAAAAA -- Mill Creek
Class AAAAA -- Lanier
Class AAAA -- Buford
Class AAA -- Morgan County
Class AA -- Greater Atlanta Christian
Class A -- George Walton Academy
