OAKWOOD - An Oakwood man is facing numerous charges after firing his shotgun at police through the front door of his home Monday afternoon.

Oakwood Police Chief Randall Moon says the initial 9-1-1 call came in just before 3:30 p.m. with the suspect's mother advising police that her son, who had apparently refused to take his medication, was beginning to act erratically.

"He grabbed a gun and told his mom to leave, that things were fixing to get ugly," Moon said.

Police were subsequently dispatched to the unidentified man's home on Oakwood Hills Drive.

Shortly after arriving on the scene, Moon says officers worked to approach the home and talk the man, who is in his 20's, into peacefully exiting the residence; that's when the suspect allegedly discharged his shotgun through the front door with the apparent intent of striking the officers located just outside the home.

Moon said, "Some of the shells went across the parking lot and struck some neighbor's windows and house...but didn't hit anyone, thank God."

Moon said the standoff ended shortly thereafter, when an operator with 9-1-1 was able to get the man on the phone and initiate a dialogue.

"Thanks to the assistance of a 9-1-1 operator they got him back on the phone and were able to convince him to come to the door," Moon added.

The suspect was quickly convinced to surrender, turning himself over to the police at roughly 3:35 p.m.

As a result of the incident, Moon says the suspect now faces charges that include three counts of aggravated assault on an officer.

More details are expected to be released in the coming days.
