ATLANTA (AP) Gov. Nathan Deal has nominated the lawmaker who sponsored the state's new $900 million transportation plan to fill a key position at the Georgia Department of Transportation.

The governor's office said Friday that Deal has picked Rep. Jay Roberts, R-Ocilla, to become the agency's new planning director.

Roberts' position must be approved by transportation committees in the House and Senate. Deal's office said Friday it expects Roberts to start his new job May 15.

In a statement, Deal called Roberts ``a subject matter expert and a statewide leader on transportation issues'' who has earned the trust of fellow lawmakers.

Roberts, who has served in the House since 2003, will resign his legislative seat next week.
