BUFORD - The Georgia Department of Transportation will be working with Gwinnett County officials on Tuesday and Wednesday to ease congestion and improve traffic flow from Interstate 985 northbound to the exit ramp to SR 20/Buford Drive, Exit 4.
“Afternoon rush hour traffic routinely fills the I-985 north exit ramp to State Route 20 and backs onto the interstate," said Brent Cook, the DOT District Engineer for Hall County.
"This change will maximize the existing asphalt and will improve traffic flow on the interstate and on State Route 20. Currently, there are four turning lanes on the northbound exit ramp to 20 - two lanes are left turn only and two lanes are right turn only. The inside right turn lane will be changed to allow traffic to turn left or right turns because the left turners are the ones that get backed up on the ramp and then on the interstate."
Traffic signal adjustments will be made Tuesday afternoon, closing one lane of the exit ramp to State Route 20. If weather permits, the striping change is planned Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. closing one lane. Once the striping is changed Wednesday, motorists can begin using the second lane from the right to turn right or left.
Overhead signs will be installed Thursday to complete the changes and give more direction to motorists.
