GAINESVILLE — After spending 13 years working for the city of Gainesville, the last six as City Manager, Kip Padgett is moving north to take the job of Town Manager in Wake Forest, N.C.

Padgett announced his resignation at the end of Tuesday evening's Gainesville City Council meeting, telling council members he will stay on the job in Gainesville until July 2. After the meeting, Padgett said he will be working closely with the person who takes the interim position in the office.

"When the council decides on an interim, [I'll be] working with that interim manager to kind of get them up to speed on where projects are," said Padgett.

Mayor Danny Dunagan said Padgett will be difficult to replace, so they won't be in a hurry to hire someone.

"Somebody's going to have some big shoes to fill, so we will take our time, we will be very diligent and we will do our very best to hire the right person for the job," said Dunagan.

Padgett was appointed City Manager in January 2009, according to the City of Gainesville website.  He started his career with the city in 2002 as the Director of Planning and Development and was named Assistant City Manager in 2007. Prior to coming to Gainesville, Padgett worked in local planning departments for Athens-Clarke County and Dawson County.
