SUGAR HILL — An early morning fire caused heavy damage to a home in Sugar Hill, but the family of five was able to escape without injury.
Gwinnett County Fire Department officials said crews were dispatched to the home on Grand Loop Road at 3:14 a.m. When they arrived, they found heavy fire conditions inside the garage area that had extended up to the second floor of the house. Crews had to use the ladder truck to battle the blaze because the flames were so intense. The home suffered significant fire, smoke and water damage, according to fire officials.
The homeowner told authorities smoke detectors woke him, so he and his spouse, along with three teenage children and a family pet were able to get out of the burning house safely.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
