ATLANTA (AP) Georgia's Pre-K Program will welcome 84,000 4 year olds this school year.

Officials say the voluntary program, which is beginning its 23rd year, has been recognized as one of the top programs in the nation based on quality standards, teacher qualifications and enrollment.

Any age eligible child residing in the state may attend the program regardless of family income.

Amy Jacobs, commissioner of Bright from the Start: Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning, says recent independent studies have shown that the program helps 4 year olds build a solid foundation for lifelong learning.

Susan Adams, assistant commissioner for the program, recommends parents visit the classroom before school starts so children are familiar with new surroundings and inform teachers of any special dietary needs or allergies the child may have.
