MORROW, Ga. — Gov. Nathan Deal says his administration is researching a pilot program aimed at job applicants who fail drug screening tests.
For instance, Deal said private employers could inform state labor officials when job applicants receiving unemployment benefits fail drug screening tests. He said state officials then could offer help for the person to get clean and find a job.
Deal briefly outlined the idea at a Wednesday gathering focused on workforce development. Deal says he plans to work with the federal Department of Labor and Georgia lawmakers before his final term in office ends.
He says the state has no mechanism now to help people addicted to drugs or alcohol until they wind up in trouble.
Deal said he's not aware of any state with such a program.
