GAINESVILLE - Two Gainesville residents involved in a domestic dispute were arrested Thursday afternoon after they abandoned their baby on the side of a Rabbittown road.

Authorities say they were called to the Petro Fast gas station on Old Cornelia Highway just after 2 p.m. Thursday following reports from the store attendant that a car seat containing an unidentified infant had been left on the side of the roadway.

While waiting for authorities to arrive, the attendant, who had safely secured the 9-month-old child, said that a woman entered the store claiming that the child belonged to her.

According to Deputy Nicole Bailes with the Hall County Sheriff's Office, after their arrival, investigators determined that the child had apparently been abandoned as the result of a domestic dispute between the child's father and mother.

Bailes said that the Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) was quickly notified of the incident.

As a result of the investigation, the child's parents, 33-year-old Heather Demonia and 30-year-old Thomas Broome, both of Gainesville, were arrested and charged with Reckless Conduct. Bailes said further charges are pending in the case.

The child, who was not injured in the incident, was released to DFCS custody.

The investigation into the matter is still underway.
