OAKWOOD - The Georgia State Patrol is investigating a single-vehicle crash that ended with the death of an Oakwood man in the early morning hours of New Year's Day.

According to GSP Sgt. Anthony Coleman, 51-year-old Ralph Proffitt was driving west on Chamblee Road just after 3:00 a.m. when he lost control of his vehicle while attempting to negotiate a curve.

Coleman says Proffitt's vehicle, a 2002 Chevrolet pickup truck, then crossed into the on-coming lane and off the roadway. Coleman said at this time the vehicle over-rotated and began to overturn, eventually rolling at least two times.

Proffitt, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, was ejected from the vehicle. His truck came to a rest on its right-hand side in a field just off the roadway.

It is unclear at this time whether the victim's death was officially pronounced at the scene or at a local hospital.

The State Patrol also did not indicate whether drugs or alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
