A Barrow County firefighter suffered a minor injury over the weekend after responding to a residential fire in the western side of the county.

Firefighters were dispatched to the Auburn-area fire just after 5 a.m. Saturday, and arrived at the scene on Pool Circle near Atlanta Highway to find "heavy fire in one area of the house," according to Barrow County EMS Capt. Scott Dakin.

"Upon arrival, crews found heavy fire in an enclosed carport that had extended in to the kitchen of the home," Dakin explained. "Firefighters made a rapid entry into the home and were able to quickly stop the fire spread."

The carport suffered heavy damage in the fire, while the kitchen area suffered a moderate level of damage.

"The remainder of the home suffered smoke damage," Dakin continued. "After extinguishing the fire, crews worked to remove smoke from the home."

Dakin said that one firefighter, whose name has not been released, was transported from the scene to a local hospital after suffering a minor injury while battling the fire.

Five adults and one child were displaced by the fire, and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
