State labor officials are teaming up later this month with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs on a couple of employment workshops in north Georgia designed specifically for veterans.
The first will be held Tuesday, Feb. 16, at the Toccoa Career Center’s conference room located at 37 Foreacre St. Two days later, on Thursday, Feb. 18, a second workshop will be held at the GDOL’s Habersham Career Center located at 215 Hodges St. in Cornelia. Both events will begin at 10 a.m.
Greg Pitts, the manager for the Georgia Department of Labor Career Center in Toccoa, said many veterans need help finding work when they return to civilian life, but they don't only need assistance with resume writing.
"I think they worry some about their skills being transferrable over into the civilian workforce," said Pitts."Of course, there are some more serious issues that veterans come back with...one of the big challenges for veterans coming back is the post traumatic stress disorder."
To that end, said Pitts, the VA will be offering counseling services for men and women attending the workshops. He said counselors will be prepared to help with marriage issues, alcohol and drug issues, bereavement, and marital and family problems. They also will provide assistance in applying for VA benefits.
Labor Department officials will help with job referrals and resume critique.
Pitts said veterans should bring valid identification, including military ID cards and driver’s licenses, along with their resumes to the workshop sites.
