People new to owning or carrying a firearm have an free option when it comes to formalized training in Hall County.

The Hall County Sheriff's Office is again accepting applications for its firearms safety course.

"They're a continuation.  The sheriff likes to have at least one a quarter," Deputy Chad Mann said.

Mann said the course involves about two hours of classroom instruction focused heavily on firearm ownership and law.

"Then we'll take them out to the range and let them actually take a little target practice," Mann said.

He also said the course is, "safety from the bottom up."  It includes tips on safely storing firearms.

"What we try and teach and preach is if you have a gun, make sure you secure it safely, especially if you have younger children that come into the residence."

Mann said previous courses have filled up within the first two to three weeks of eligibility.

The next course is set for Saturday, March 12, 2016 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the sheriff's office firearms training complex.  Applications are available at the Hall County Sheriff’s Office and must be completed in person.

Additional requirements will be provided upon acceptance to course.
