Three bills on the Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials' legislative watch list, each deemed anti-immigrant by the group, advanced in their respective chamber by the state legislative crossover deadline last week, and GALEO is stepping up its opposition to them.
Senate Bill 6 and Senate Resolution 675 passed out of the Georgia Senate on February 29 and House Bill 781 passed out of the Georgia House on February 26.
Jerry Gonzalez, Executive Director of GALEO, said, "The anti-immigrant legislative package which has moved forward will paint Georgia as an unwelcomingstate, which shuns foreigners. This is not good for Georgia's economic development efforts at all."
Gonzalez added there is no rational policy basis for any of these three bills. They are not fiscally conservative, he said, adding that two of them would actually be costly for state and local governments. Furthermore, he continued, these bills are harmful for Georgia's economic development.
