In the not-too-distant future, portions of Thurmon Tanner Parkway in Oakwood will be designated to honor veterans of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

Oakwood City Council voted unanimously Monday night to place signage along the roadway in honor of area veterans.

Local Vietnam War veteran Johnny Hulsey made an appeal to council for the designation.

"Since we have a new VA clinic on Thurmon Tanner Parkway, we probably have three to four hundred veterans per day that travel the parkway," Hulsey said.

He said seeing the signs as the veterans make the drive to their appointments at the clinic at Tanner Creek Drive would "probably put a little smile on their face."

Under stipulations of the resolution, the portion of the roadway from Mundy Mill Road to Oakwood Road will be designated as World War II Veterans Parkway; the portion from Oakwood Road to Plainview Road will be designated as the Korean War Veterans Parkway; and the portion from Plainview Road to H.F. Reed Industrial Parkway will be designated as the Vietnam War Veterans Parkway. Each section of the parkway will have two signs - one in each direction - marking the designations.

Cost to erect the six signs will be about $600.

City Manager Stan Brown said it will take about a month for the signs to be made and installed.
