The Gainesville Housing Authority is moving ahead with plans to redevelop the site of the current Green Hunter Homes on Atlanta Street, and the agency makes its first appeal for rezoning of the midtown property in early April.

The Gainesville Planning and Appeals Board will consider rezoning of the 11.67-acre tract to Planned Unit Development (PUD) so that a 260 multi-family apartment development can be built. The proposed development will be gated and will consist of five buildings that will range between three and four stories in height.

The current housing development, commonly known as Atlanta Street Apartments, would be demolished. The current housing development was built in two phases in 1952 and 1958.

GHA says the project will use public and private financing, relying heavily on the Low Income Housing Tax Credit Program through the Department of Community Affairs.

In addition to the rezoning request, GHA has asked the planning board to abandon a portion of Atlanta Street between Chestnut Street and E.E. Butler Parkway. The section of right-of-way is about 669 linear feet, and parking, sidewalks and green space would be located in the abandoned area as part of the new development.

The members of the planning board will consider both requests at their April 12 meeting at the Gainesville Justice Center on Queen City Parkway. The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m.
The Gainesville Housing Authority has plans to demolish Green Hunter Homes (better known as Atlanta Street Apartment) and replace the units with an upgraded development.
