A Peachtree Corners woman faces charges after allegedly holding her infant grandson hostage Wednesday morning in a standoff with Gwinnett County Police.
Authorities identified the woman as Laurie Morgan, 57.
After spending more than four hours negotiating with Morgan, Gwinnett County SWAT officers broke down the door of a Peachtree Corners apartment and retrieved the baby safely.
In a press statement, Gwinnett Police Cpl. Michele Pihera said officers were called to the Highland Corners Apartments just before 3 a.m. Wednesday to check into a domestic incident.
She said when the officers arrived, they discovered an argument had taken place between a woman, later identified as Morgan, and a male, thought to be the baby's father. During the argument, the male left the apartment. Morgan allegedly picked up the 4-week old baby boy while holding a firearm.
At some point, Morgan allegedly walked outside while holding the baby and fired a round from her firearm. After she fired the shot, Pihera said, the SWAT Team was activated.
Pihera said phone communication with Morgan ended around 4 a.m., but SWAT officers continued to speak with her using a PA system.
Pihera said at around 8 a.m., members of the SWAT team broke through the door of the apartment, positioned themselves between the suspect and the baby and then arrested Morgan.
After emergency personnel checked the baby, they turned the infant over to his mother.
Morgan was booked into the Gwinnett County Jail on charges of aggravated assault and reckless conduct.
