More names to be unveiled in History Center Freedom Garden on Armed Forces Day

This weekend, new names will be added to the granite pillars that make up the Circle of Honor in the Freedom Garden at the Northeast Georgia History Center in Gainesville. 

The 24 names will be unveiled during a special ceremony on Armed Forces Day, which is Saturday, May 21. The ceremony, which begins at 1 p.m., is open to the public. 

Ret. Lt. Col. Scott Ballard, a member of the Board of Directors for the Northesst Georgia History Center, said the Freedom Garden honors veterans who have served in both conflict and in times of peace can be honored.

"The purpose of the Freedom Garden is to make sure that the entire community has a place to go and understand the sacrifices that people have made," Ballard said in an interview with WDUN radio.

Hall County Sheriff Gerald Couch is scheduled to speak at Saturday's event, and the HCSO Honor Guard will be part of the ceremony. 

The Freedom Garden was officially dedicated on May 19, 2007.
