A $33.5 million budget for the city of Gainesville moves forward after a first-reading approval vote at Tuesday's night's city council meeting.

Council members heard from only one citizen at their meeting. While he was happy about not having a tax increase in the FY '17 budget, he urged caution with spending.

"My suggestion is the council consider not spending until the revenues are actually in hand," said George Majesko, a resident of the Cresswind community on Browns Bridge Road.

Mayor Danny Dunagan assured him that the budget - even with some $14 million in planned capitol improvements - was "very conservative."

"We do not plan on spending everything we bring in," Dunagan said.

First reading approval was unanimous. Councilman George Wangemann was absent from Tuesday's meeting.

A final vote on the budget for the new fiscal year comes on June 21.
