Bus stops in the city of Gainesville will get a new look as 15 artists were selected tp display their work in the bus shelters.
"A few months ago we applied for a grant to the Federal Transit Administration to update and beautify our Gainesville Connection bus shelters," said Community Services Director Phillipa Lewis-Moss at a work session last month. "They awarded us a grant $50,000."
The 15 pieces were selected from over 80 entries by the Vision 2030 Public Art Committee. The works all focus on the connectivity of people to the community .
Moss said 12 bus shelters will sport the new art work, and some shelters will feature more than one piece .
"The bus shelters we purchase are from Tuller Bus Company. They manufacture the glass panels in the back of the shelters," Moss said. "They actually have the technology to take the artwork and embed it in the actual glass, so you'll get a color picture that's actually quite lovely."
The artists selected were Juanivir Acosta, Jason Bonhannon, Helene Gardelle, Anne Brodie Hill, Travis Massey, Erica McCullough, Frank Norton Jr., Victoria Webb, Larry Griffeth, Edgar Esquivel, and Penny K. Stowe. Each artist will be given a $500 honorarium, however Moss said at least one refused the money and gave the art to the city.
The artwork will be installed in August.
