CANTON, Ga. (AP) — Authorities say a northwest Georgia police K-9 has died after being left in the rear of a patrol car for several hours.
Local news media report that Cherokee Marshal's Office and Sheriff's Office were called out to police Lt. Daniel Peabody's home Friday.
Chief Ron Hunton says Peabody arrived home about 4:15 p.m. and left the 4-year-old Belgian Malinois named Inka in the back of the car with the engine turned off to deal with another dog inside his home. Around 7 p.m., the officer went back outside and found the dog dead inside the patrol car.
Hunton says Inca's body was taken to the University of Georgia for a necropsy. An investigation is ongoing.
A Marshal's Office spokesman says criminal charges are possible.
