CLEVELAND — A Lumpkin County man apparently took his own life rather than going to jail Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred on Rockhouse Road in Lumpkin County Tuesday morning when a White County sheriff's deputy attempted to serve a warrant on the man.

White County Chief Deputy Bob Ingram said information is preliminary at this time, but the deputy had served the warrant.

The man was there with his family and after being served with the warrant he refused to go with the deputy and retreated back in the residence with a gun, Ingram said.

The man’s children and wife exited the house and Ingram said the man then took his own life.

Lumpkin County Sheriff's Lt. Chris Pfrogner confirmed via email his deputies were at the scene, saying the man committed suicide before the officers made entry into the home.

No officers or family members were injured.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been requested to conduct an investigation.

"We have been requested and agents are responding," said Kimberly Williams, special agent in charge for GBI Region 8.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of relatives.
