A Gainesville man suffered critical injuries in a collision on Candler Highway during Tuesday morning's rush hour.

Initially, the two vehicle crash was said to have resulted in a fatality, but Georgia State Patrol Sgt. Anthony Coleman said that was not the case. Coleman said John P. Smith, 37, was critically injured when his Jeep Cherokee was hit by a tractor trailer on Candler Highway (Ga. 60) at Lee Land Road.

Coleman said in an e-mail statement that Smith failed to maintain his lane of travel and his Jeep crossed the centerline into the southbound lane and into the path of the tractor trailer.

"The tractor trailer attempted to brake and steer to avoid impact. The Jeep struck the trailer portion of the tractor trailer with the front of the jeep," the statement read.

The driver of the tractor trailer was identified as Joseph Strickland, 53, of Crawford.

The crash happened around 7:30 a.m.
