Hall County Firefighter leads local effort to help Louisiana flood victims

Hall County Fire Services Lieutenant Damon Migliore is leading an effort with the fire department and Straight Street Revolution Ministries to aid flood victims in his hometown of Central, Louisiana.

Following the August 12 flooding in Louisiana that left 13 people dead and 60,000 homes damaged or destroyed, Migliore said he wanted to find a way to help.

"I grew up in the small community of Central so I went down there right away to distribute household needs and clothes that people needed right way, but I left that following weekend with so much more still needing to be done," Migliore said.

"Most of the folks there are living in campers or with families because their homes are inhabitable. In fact, a friend of mine there is housing five family members in his home."

After returning to Hall County, Migliore contacted Hall County Fire Chief Jeff Hood about a support effort for the flood victims who set up a partnership with Straight Street Ministries to raise awareness and funds locally.

Although the flooding that left communities under 25 inches of rain in a 24 hour period occurred over a month ago, Migliore believes that people impacted are still in dire need of help.

"We are in the process of gathering all donations, proceeds, and volunteers to make another trip. We have a handful of guys chomping at the bit to come help us. Right now we are trying to narrow down the funds for supplies and sheet rock to help repair homes," Migliore said.

He says they are also looking for :

- Vehicle donations for the trips to and from Louisiana

- Supplies that will aid in two elderly households that do not have any flood insurance for their home

- Monetary funds for Louisiana firefighters who need assistance with their homes as well as a fire truck that was damaged while assisting in rescue efforts
