A Norcross teen is said to be in serious condition after accidentally shooting himself in the head with a stolen handgun early Monday evening.

Gwinnett County police responded to the accidental shooting call on Wingfoot Way near Harbins Road just before 6 p.m.

Police Cpl. Deon Washington said in a media release that the victim was a 14-year-old male. His identity has not been released.

The teen was apparently inside a friend's home playing with a handgun when the weapon discharged and a bullet struck him in the head.

Washington said the victim's friend then picked up the handgun as well.

"Following the shooting, his 12-year-old friend who was sitting near him...attempted to unload it, and fired the handgun a second time," Washington continued. "No one was harmed by that shot."

Washington said the boy's condition was listed as serious when he was transported from the scene to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

The initial investigation into the shooting revealed the .40-caliber Smith and Wesson handgun that the victim was playing with was actually stolen out of Marietta earlier this year. Washington said it is unknown at this time how the teens came into possession of the firearm.

Authorities later determined that there were "at least" two adults inside the home at the time of the shooting, as well four children between the ages of 5 and 16.

Washington added: "There are no charges expected against the adults who were inside the home during the time of the shooting."

An investigation into the incident is underway, with Washington noting that the shooting should serve as a reminder of the dangerous implications of children handling weapons.

"This case is serious illustration of how dangerous firearms can be in the hands of children."
