State and local officials are investigating the death of a Toccoa child at a home in the city overnight Saturday.

“At 9:30 yesterday [Sunday] morning, Toccoa Fire Department, the police department and Stephens County Ambulance Service were called to respond to a residence at the corner of North Tallulah Street and West Doyle Street,” Toccoa Police Chief Tim Jarrell said Monday.

“When we arrived, we found an 11-year-old child unconscious and unresponsive,” Jarrell said. “We immediately contacted the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and asked for them to send us an agent and their crime scene unit.”

The Stephens County Coroner’s Office also is assisting in the investigation.

The child’s body was taken to the GBI State Crime Lab in Decatur, where an autopsy was scheduled for either late Monday or Tuesday, according to Jarrell.

“At that point, we hope to know more as to what was the cause of death and where our investigation goes from there,” Jarrell said.

The investigation is ongoing.
