As long as the weather cooperates, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will close parts of I-985 starting Friday night as construction continues on the extension of the I-85 express lanes.

According to a media release from GDOT spokeswoman Katie Strickland, all lanes will be closed on I-985 northbound at the I-85/I-985 split starting at 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7.

The lane closures will stay in place until 5 a.m. the following day. Lanes will be closed on Saturday and Sunday nights, as well.

All traffic traveling to I-985 will be detoured on I-85 to exit 115, then on SR-20 northbound until vehicles reach I-985 at exit 4. Motorists traveling on I-985 southbound will not be effected by the closure and detour.

GDOT crews will be placing Prestressed Concrete (PSC) bridge beams in the area, according to Strickland.

"Motorists are cautioned to reduce their speed while traveling through work zones, pay attention and watch for workers," Strickland said.

Again, it is possible the construction schedule could change depending on weather conditions.
