Hall County needs new heavy equipment for landfills

Hall County is looking to purchase two new pieces of heavy equipment for the Department of Public Works’ Landfill Division.

The request for a new trash compactor and a new dozer was put on the consent agenda at Monday’s work session for this Thursday’s Board of Commissioners meeting.

The total cost of these two vehicles will be around $888,000 ($768,000 for the trash compactor and $120,000 for the dozer) after receiving trade-in value for the old machines.

The money will come out of the landfill fund, which operates more like a business, and over the past two years has added $1.1 million and $2.2 million to cash, respectively.

“The landfill fund has operated in a conservative manner,” Hall County Financial Service Director Zach Propes said. “Therefore, reserves are adequate to realize this additional investment in capital equipment.”

The current six-year-old trash compactor and three-year-old dozer have both required extensive repairs over recent months.

While other brands, such as Komatsu, were considered, the commission decided to go with two Caterpillar machines to stay in line with the rest of the equipment at the landfill.

“I don’t think it’s prudent to mix the fleet,” said District 3 Commissioner Scott Gibbs.
