A vacant home in Gainesville suffered serious damage Monday night after a fire broke out near the city center.
Firefighters were called to the 1,200-square-foot home on Auburn Avenue near Jesse Jewell Parkway around 7 p.m., where they "found heavy fire and smoke coming from the structure," according to Gainesville Fire Division Chief Keith Smith.
Smith said the building was roughly 75% involved when first responders arrived on scene.
"Crews worked in a defensive mode and knocked the fire down so that they could make an interior attack," Smith said. He noted that Auburn Avenue was closed at the intersections of Myrtle and Dorsey streets while crews worked the scene.
After firefighters finished their attack, Smith said the Fire Marshal was called to the scene in order to determine the cause of the fire, which Smith said was "unknown" as of 10 p.m. Monday night.
No injuries were reported.
More information is expected to be released as the investigation continues.
