The state Department of Natural Resources has recovered the body of a Forsyth County man who went missing in Lake Lanier after a collision on the water Monday night.

Yakov D. Shteyman, 34, was found near the original accident scene in water that was 65 feet deep, according to DNR spokesman Mark McKinnon.

"Game Wardens located the Cumming resident with sonar, near the incident scene," McKinnon explained. "They recovered him a short time later with the Remote Operated Vehicle."

Shteyman's body was recovered at 7:38 p.m., less that 24 hours after the collision was reported.

McKinnon said Shteyman was operating a jet ski in the area of Six Mile Creek around 8:30 Monday night when he apparently hit a bass boat and then went under the water. The boat operator was not injured.

The search for Shteyman's body was conducted on the water and in the air, according to McKinnon.

"The Game Wardens utilized sonar equipment throughout the day Tuesday and DNR Aviation flew the search area several times as well," he said. "The Forsyth County Fire Department, Sheriff’s Office, and the Corp of Engineers Offices also assisted in the search from beginning to end."

The Critical Incident Reconstruction Team of the DNR's Law Enforcement division is now investigating the incident, with McKinnon saying a 6 to 8 week turnaround is expected.
