More than 110 seniors at Lanier Village Estates are volunteering to be “grandparents for a day” to welcome dozens of special needs children to their annual Spring Fling Saturday.

A busload of children, ages infant to six years old, from Challenged Child, along with their families, will arrive at 10:00 to be greeted by their cheering “grandmas” and “granddaddies” who have organized a day of entertainment for them.

The Acts Retirement community will host a variety of events including kickball, corn hole, “go fish,” jump roping, a bubble machine, arts and crafts station and face-painting.

Two senior volunteers will also dress up as a big chicken and rabbit to entertain the kids.

For the first time at this event, the resident-favorite, popular Train Room will be open to the children. Their hosts have donated their childhood antique trains which chug through the tiny village operated by Lanier Village's train enthusiasts.

The retirees have also been collecting school supplies for Challenged Child, and will be donating the school’s “wish list” at the event.
