The Department of Natural Resources has issued an advisory against swimming due to bacteria levels in the water at Don Carter State Park, according to state parks officials.
Kim Hatcher with the Georgia State Parks confirmed in an email statement that the Gainesville park is still open but swimming or wading is not advised.
Hatcher said they test the waters at every swimming beach in Georgia State Parks before they open for the summer season, and the initial water-quality test results showed high levels of E. coli. Hatcher said the levels could be due to heavy rains before testing but they can't be sure.
The latest test results are due back Thursday, Hatcher said. "Hopefully we’ll be able to lift the warning."
