No charges are expected to be filed in a three-vehicle Jackson County accident that claimed the life of an elderly man Thursday afternoon.

Authorities responded to Highway 332 near Stone Creek Drive around 3:45 p.m., where callers had alerted the Georgia State Patrol to an accident scene near Pendergrass that included a possible fatality.

"The investigation thus far has determined that a...Ford Taurus, driven by an 82-year-old man from Hoschton, was traveling north on 332," explained Post Commander Tim Meyer with GSP Post 32 in Athens. "For unknown reasons, that vehicle traveled out of its lane into the southbound lane and sideswiped a...Toyota Tundra driven by an 18-year-old male, also from the Hoschton area."

Meyer said the Taurus then struck a second vehicle, described as a Jeep Patriot, that had been traveling southbound just behind the Tundra. The vehicle was being driven by Hoschton female, age 17.

The elderly driver of the Taurus was pronounced dead at the scene, while the Tundra driver suffered minor injuries and refused medical treatment.

"The...female driver of the Jeep Patriot suffered serious injuries and was transported from the scene to Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital by ambulance," Meyer noted.

While Meyer said the investigation will remain open pending a toxicology report on the deceased driver, he added that no charges are expected to be filed against the surviving drivers.

The identities of those involved are being withheld pending notification of family.
