CLEVELAND — Officials report that three dogs have been euthanized and three others are under a 45-day observation after contact with a rabid raccoon in the Mt. Scenic Drive area in southern White County.

Of the six dogs, three owned by one family were not current on vaccinations, according to White County Environmental Health Manager Sean Sullivan. The other three dogs, owned by another family, are current on their shots.

The three dogs that were not current on their vaccinations were euthanized Wednesday, Sullivan said.

White County Public Safety Director David Murphy said the Georgia Public Health Lab Virology Section in Decatur, where the raccoon was shipped for testing, notified White County Environmental Health on Tuesday that the raccoon tested positive for rabies.

This is the fourth confirmed case of rabies in White County this year.

According to Murphy, positive alert signs will be posted in the area where the rabid raccoon was located.
