One person is in custody while another remains on the run after the shooting death of a Gwinnett County police officer near Shiloh Middle School in Snellville on Saturday.

According to Gwinnett Police Sgt. Jake Smith, Officer Antwan Toney was shot while responding to a "suspicious vehicle" report, with one or more suspects opening fire as officers approached the vehicle.

The official dispatch took place at 2:32 p.m.

"Gwinnett County Police Department officers were dispatched to a suspicious vehicle call at Crumps Landing Road and White Road, which is near Shiloh Middle School," Smith explained. "The officers located the suspicious vehicle. As they approached, shots were fired from inside the suspect vehicle."

One of the gunshots struck Toney, who was pulled to cover by his fellow officers. Smith said the suspect vehicle then fled the scene, and was located a short distance away at the intersection of Ross Road and Calumet Farm Lane.

Officer Toney, who had been with the department since October 2015, was transported from the scene to Gwinnett Medical Center, where he later died of his injuries.

Detectives have charged 19-year-old Isaih Pretlow and18-year-old Tafahree Maynard, both of Snellville, with aggravated assault and felony murder.

Pretlow is in custody, while the search is continuing for Maynard.

Maynard should be considered armed and dangerous, and anyone encountering him should call 911.  Anyone with information on his location should call 770-513-5710.
