Athens-Clarke County Police and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation issued an alert Wednesday morning for a young woman who apparently had been abducted from the downtown Athens area; later in the day, she was reported safe.

The GBI issued a press release saying a college-age white female had been coaxed into a black Nissan Sentra around 12:15 a.m. on Broad Street. Witnesses called police, telling them they saw the vehicle driving in the area of Boulevard and Chase Streets.

A short time ago, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported the woman had been found safe by University of Georgia police. Authorities have not identified the woman.

Meanwhile, the driver of the vehicle has been arrested, according to the newspaper.

The GBI said the suspect has a criminal history that includes child pornography and violent sexual assault. He was believed to be out of jail on probation or parole. The suspect has not been named.
