About 200,000 gallons of sewage spilled into Sherwood Creek in Flowery Branch over the weekend, according to Hall County government officials.
The forcemain break was discovered Saturday afternoon in the Reunion subdivision.
"The spill was caused by the recent flooding, which undercut the creek bank and caused the forcemain to separate," said Hall County Public Works Director Ken Rearden. "Once the spill was discovered, the sewage pump station at the site of the spill was shut off and the spill was stopped within minutes."
Rearden said a contractor is working to make permanent repairs to the forcemain. He anticipates the work will take a couple of weeks to finish.
Environmental officials are currently reviewing water samples from Sherwood Creek and workers are picking up debris from the spill.
Service is not expected to be disrupted while the work is going on.
