Two men suffered serious injuries in a Wednesday afternoon crash on Athens Highway, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

Cpl. Josh Hedden with Georgia State Patrol Post 6 in Gainesville said the accident occurred just after 2:30 p.m. on Athens Highway (Ga. 11) near Squires Road south of Gainesville.

Hedden said Bennie Ray Davis, 51, of Murrayville was driving his 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse northbound on Athens Highway and failed to properly negotiate the curve at Squires Road. Davis' vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a 2012 Mercedes Benz E350 in the southbound lane. The Mercedes, driven by Peter Harry Shanahan, 58, of Mill Spring, North Carolina, careened into a ditch on the west side of the highway, according to Hedden.

Both men sustained serious injuries in the accident.

Davis was charged with failure to maintain lane and having an open container in the passenger area of his vehicle.
