A man who was killed in a single-vehicle crash on the Buford Drive ramp to I-85 southbound Tuesday morning had been involved in another accident just minutes earlier.

Gwinnett County Police Sgt. Jake Smith said in an email that the initial hit-and-run accident happened on I-85 south between Hamilton Mill Road and Buford Drive around 4:10 a.m.

"The at-fault vehicle was a black Mini Cooper and initially stopped on the interstate," Smith said. "That vehicle, driven by a male, fled the scene and was encountered by officers on Buford Drive at about 4:22 a.m."

Smith said when officers tried to get the vehicle to pull over, the driver fled and hit the median wall on the ramp from Buford Drive onto I-85 south.

Smith said the driver died at the scene.

The man's name has not been released, since relatives are still being notified.
