Bill to rename Clermont post office for local marine heads to Trump's desk

A bill that would rename the Clermont post office in honor of a local marine who died in action in Vietnam is now heading to President Donald Trump's desk.

9th District Congressman Doug Collins, R-Gainesville, introduced the legislation last fall to rename the post office for Zachary Taylor Addington, a Clermont native who was a rifleman in the 3rd Marine Division of the Fleet Marine Force.

The Senate passed the bill late Wednesday night, and it now awaits Trump's signature.

“Lance Corporal Zack Addington represents the selfless courage that's cultivated in northeast Georgia, and I'm excited to see this bill leave Congress and head to the president's desk for his signature,” said Collins in a statement.

Addington, who was awarded a Purple Heart, was killed in May 1968.

At the time H.R. 3821 was introduced, Addington's family said in a statement issued through Collins' office that they were "very thankful that Zachary is being honored this way."

It cleared the house in November.
