Officials deem fire at Sandy Cross Community Center suspicious

Posted 2:25PM on Monday 12th March 2018 ( 6 years ago )

An early-morning fire at a Sandy Cross landmark on Ga. 51 in Franklin County remains under investigation.

The Sandy Cross Community Center, which formerly functioned as Sandy Cross School and at one time as an orphanage, was destroyed by the fire early Monday, March 12.

“The fire that destroyed the community center is still under investigation,” said Glenn Allen, spokesman for Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Ralph Hudgens’ office.

Numerous area fire stations responded to the blaze, located roughly seven miles from Interstate 85 in the Sandy Cross community.

“We consider this a suspicious fire and Commissioner Hudgens is asking anyone with information about what started this fire to call (800) 282-5804,” Allen said. “The fire department is still putting out the fire, so our investigator will return to the scene in the morning.”

Smoke pours from the remains of the Sandy Cross Community Center on Monday.
