New website educates, helps northeast Georgia job seekers find highway contractor jobs

With roadwork becoming a more common site after the passage of the $900 million Transportation Funding Act, there a plenty of jobs that need to be filled. 

 

The Georgia Highway Contractors Association launched a website as part of the Fast Lane to Jobs campaign with the goal to fill an increase of openings for asphalt paving workers, asphalt plant operators, concrete laborers, highway bridge carpenters, heavy equipment operators and mechanics, commercial truck drivers and traffic control workers.

 

The website for job seekers features educational information about each job, average salary information, typical career paths and an interactive map showing which highway jobs are hiring in various regions across the state. There is also a special section of the site raising awareness about career possibilities for women and a Spanish version of the site.

 

"In northeast Georgia, contractors are currently needing many types of workers. While some previous construction experience is helpful, for many jobs, no experience is required and training is provided on the job," said Brett Johnson with Vertical Earth in Cumming. "The highway construction industry is one of the few not requiring a high school diploma or college degree. While the work can be difficult, the work is fulfilling, the average pay is high and the opportunities for advancement are numerous. Many of our company managers and executives began as laborers and operators."

 

While the Fast Lane to Jobs campaign aims to connect job seekers with varying highway contracting jobs, it also seeks to educate potential workers about the jobs and career fields themselves and the potential benefits in their field of interest.
