County leaders move forward with bike sharing project in Forsyth County

A new option for enjoying the Big Creek Greenway in Forsyth County could be available soon.

Procurement Director Donna Kukarola recently spoke to the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners about a recommendation to partner with Go Bikes to offer a bike sharing program.

She said, "At present it is at no cost to the county. What we would be negotiating is the actual ride times. Right now it's considered to be $3 to $5 per hour and there might be some other plans they would have. The other thing is looking at locations and where it would go."

Kukarola called the partnership with Geaux Bikes to provide rental bikes for use on the Greenway a Beta program and said, "This first phase would be Beta to see if it even worked. This is a new company. They are based in the county. They're very excited about doing this and working with the county to see if this will work or not."

She said the county will provide a place to put the bike operation and the rest will be handled privately by Go Bikes. Commissioners got reassurance from staff that the county would not be liable for any injuries, refunds or complaints.

Commissioners unanimously approved moving forward with the idea.
