A woman was killed when she was struck by a cargo train in Gainesville early Thursday morning, but authorities have not yet identified her.

"Right now, this is one of those cases where we have more questions than we do answers," said Gainesville Police Sgt. Kevin Holbrook. "The investigation is still very active and ongoing. We're working to identify the female who was struck by the train."

The deadly accident happened around 6 a.m. under the Queen City Parkway bridge near Georgia Avenue, according to Holbrook.

"We know from witness testimony from individuals on the train that the train was traveling down the tracks, they approached a female subject on or about the tracks, they did everything they could to notify that individual that they were coming through," Holbrook said.

Unfortunately, he said, the woman was hit and killed.

Holbrook said the conductor of the train called 911 and then notified dispatchers with Norfolk Southern. Officials with the railroad company are assisting local authorities with the investigation.

Holbrook said the primary goal right now is to make a positive identification of the victim and then notify her family.

He acknowledged some homeless people still live in the area under the bridge; however, he did not know if the woman lived there or was simply walking through the area.
