A woman believed to be part of the local homeless community has been identified as the victim of an accident on a Gainesville train track.

Gainesville Police Cpl. Drew Reed said 33-year-old Jennifer Johnson died when she was hit by a train early Thursday morning in the area of the Queen City Parkway Bridge.

Johnson had a Lawrenceville address, according to Reed, but he said she was also known to be part of the homeless community in Gainesville.

A spokeswoman for Good News at Noon in Gainesville indicated in an email that the clients at the facility were upset over Johnson's death. A volunteer for The Way in Gainesville said Thursday that Johnson has spent some time at that ministry, as well.

Reed said investigators are unsure why Johnson was walking on the train tracks at 6 in the morning and he said it does not appear there were witnesses to the accident, other than the conductor and others on the Norfolk Southern train that hit the woman. Reed said if anyone has information that might help with the investigation, they are encouraged to contact the Gainesville Police Department.
